I once taught a student who was a good kid, just a little unfocussed. I made him cry once at the end of a term because he came in the last day asking for an A. We did everything we could to get his grade up, but it just wasn't enough. I told him if he wanted an A, he needed to continuously do A quality work throughout the semester. I felt bad at the time, but what resulted was a kid the next term who was constantly checking with me if he had done A work on the assignment that day. He had taken the lesson to heart which was good to see. He still easily got distracted, but he was trying.
Well, one day, while I was teaching about the French and Indian War, this student, let's call him Joe, raised his hand to answer a question. I was surprised at Joe's willingness to participate in the discussion. That was out of the norm. But I was even more surprised when his answer was 100% spot on. I was seriously impressed, that is until he ruined it.
In Joe's enthusiasm in describing the French and Indian War, he finished his description of one of the battles by slapping the kid in front of him with both his hands. WHAP! Right on the unsuspecting boy's back. The poor, quiet, chubby kid sitting in front of him literally jumped out of his seat in shock. And the look of surprise on his face: Priceless.
I don't know why Joe did that. He was so close to impressing me with his response and then he ruined it by physically assaulting the kid in front of him. Luckily that kid was ok, because I had completely lost it by that point. It was the end of the day, and I was literally slap happy. I got the giggles and there was no stopping them. I was laughing so hard, I couldn't finish the lesson that period.
